How glorious is the grace of God! God has done so much for us in Christ. The Apostle Paul is overwhelmed by the reality and the implications of the spiritual blessings that he describes in Ephesians 1:1-14. When Paul thinks about the blessings of sonship, redemption, the Holy Spirit, etc., he is compelled both to thank God and to pray for the saints in Ephesians 1:15-23. This section of the letter is known as Paul’s First Apostolic Prayer for the Ephesians. The prayer is a wonderful model for all Christians to structure their individual prayer lives. Within this rich prayer are (1) a petition for wisdom and revelation; (2) an appreciation of the Resurrection power of Jesus Christ that lives on the inside of Christians; (3) a recognition of the absolute authority of Jesus Christ; and (4) a reminder that we the Church are the Body of Christ and that Christ fills us to full capacity with Himself.
Each day during my personal prayer time, I pray something like the following: “Heavenly Father, grant me the wisdom and revelation spoken of by the Apostle Paul. I need spiritual insight. I don’t know how to approach life apart from your perspective and guidance. Dear God, I know that you see things from the beginning and the end. You see things from all sides and from all possible perspectives. You see things the way they really are. Therefore, I need your divine perspective. I need the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of you. Open my spiritual eyes that I might see the truth.”
Praying the words of Scripture will greatly enrich your personal times of prayer. Ephesians 1 is a great place to begin. If you enjoyed today’s devotion, I invite you to join me for a more in-depth study of Paul’s Letter to Ephesians. Please clink on the button below to begin your journey.
